For the fans; organic popcorn and local beers can be bought at the counter for a fair price. Check out the calendar to see what is up for the next year and don't miss out. http://www.capitolkino.de
CSA Freudenthal – Community supported Agriculture
Around 3 km outside of Witzenhausen you will find a farm with a special concept. They call for solidary agriculture in and around Witzenhausen. The core idea is to have a close cooperation between those who produce the food and those who actually eat the food. Sustainable cultivating is collectively financed by using a membership fee and the entire harvest is shared collectively as well. After a hail there is less, after good weather conditions there is more! The risk of the agricultural production is carried by the community. In addition, all members get in close contact with the practices and procedures of gardening and farming during the whole year.
Twice a week (currently Tuesday and Friday) the harvested food will be provided in pick-up areas in Witzenhausen and Freudenthal. You wish you could be part of that or you just want to have a look on their concepts? You’ll find more information here: https://gemuesefreuden.wordpress.com/

Cultural landscape (Kulturlandschaft)
Witzenhausen is famous for its cherries and has a wide variety of different cherry trees that are very rare. Every year tourists come to see the impressive view of the blossoming cherry trees covering the fields. Because some cherry trees are not so easy to cultivate (the cherries hang too high in the trees) people have been discussing about removing the ''old trees' replacing them by 'easier to handle trees. This idea has caused resistance, also by the initiative Kulturlandschaft (Cultural Landscape). Kulturlandschaft is trying to maintain the beautiful and unique landscape of Witzenhausen and its biodiversity. With upcoming urbanisation we tend to forget the importance of a healthy, beautiful and diverse landscape and underestimate the effect a landscape can have on our psyche. Are you interested in the thoughts of Kulturlandschaft, read more on http://www.ttwitzenhausen.de/79-termine/249-aktionsbuendnis-gruenden-kulturlandschaft-erhalten.html

Fair Trade Town Witzenhausen
In September 2011 something interesting happened in Witzenhausen; shop owners, local authorities, businesses, organisations and school representatives gathered together to bring up important global issues. Unfair trade, poor working conditions and inhumane social conditions in developing countries were on the agenda. Together they came to the conclusion that something had to be done to fight these injustices in the world. At the end of 2011 the result was there: Witzenhausen transformed itself into a Fair Trade Town.
The idea of a fair trade town is to facilitate the access to fair food and to increase the demand of fair trade products, so that more work opportunities and better living conditions can be created for the farmers in the producing countries. In Witzenhausen fair food products are nowadays available from cinema to cafeteria, from supermarkets to restaurants and from universities to primary schools and so on. More than 2200 cities worldwide are already labelled as fair trade. Do you also feel like fighting injustices and support smallholder farmers? Are you as an organisation or as a citizen interested in this project and would you like to help Witzenhausen to become even more fair? Find contact information and more details about the project on this webpage. http://www.witzenhausen.eu/Sites/gensite.asp?Sid=cms201220141251475975915&Art=01124

Give away shelf
Why would you throw food away if somebody else can still use it? Exactly this question was raised by a group of students. Very often we throw things away because we simply don’t need them anymore or just don’t like them. Did you know that on average a German throws away 80 kilogram of food per year? This calls for action. A group of students decided to put a Verschenkeregal (a give away shelf ) in front of Transition Town Witzenhausen, a place located in the middle of the shopping street and therefore easy accessible for all. The rules are simple; unspoiled and clean foods can be placed into the shelf. This also means that products that passed the expiry date but still smell and look good can be placed into the shelf. Everybody in need can take the products out. This way we help each other and the environment. A verschenke regal is an easy to implement tool that can be used on a variety of locations. Are you interested in setting up a verschenkeregal and do you need some inspiration or advise? Have a look at the website of transition town (http://www.ttwitzenhausen.de)

Bread Spreads Coop
In Germany bread plays a central role in the daily diet. It contains important nutrients such as vitamin B and fibres and supports a healthy diet..A huge variety of different types of bread can be found when entering a bakery or supermarket in Witzenhausen. Also a big variety of bread spreads can be found, but do we actually know what we eat on top of our daily bread, where the products are coming from and how it has been processed? This were reasons for 12 people from Witzenhausen to come together and to create local, seasonal, organic and tasteful breads spreads. Also the packaging material in environmental friendly. The preparation of savory spreads is connected to a shared knowledge between members and the enrichment and recovery of culinary culture knowledge that has been largely lost by the industrial food production. As part of the Unforgedbile project, the Coop shows that it not only about the cultivation of local products, but also about the processing, distribution and feeding of these products. Weekly the members take turn in the production of the bread spread and then store it at a central place where other members can pick it up. Are you curious to see what kind of varieties of spreads you can put on your bread or maybe you would like to share your unique ideas? Visit the following website to read more about the project.
