Did you know that in Germany 70 percent of men and 50 percent of women are too heavy? Even more shocking is that every fifth German suffers from obesity. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of getting diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer. These diseases are so called diseases of prosperity, and for a good reason. With our busy lifestyles, and a lack of knowledge, we tend to put insufficient attention to what we eat and underestimate the importance of healthy and sustainable food. The key aspect ‘healthy and sustainable diets’, goes beyond making healthy choices. The idea is that healthy choices should not only be based upon nutritional value, but also consider health for the planet and fair treatment of people. Consuming less meat for example will be beneficial for human health, animal welfare and the health of the planet. To make well considered choices it is therefore important to educate people, to facilitate the access to sustainable foods and to promote healthy lifestyles.
